The challange

In farms with large areas, agricultural engineers need to communicate with their managers and inform them of their activities and receive various tasks from them. WhatsApp cannot arrange this huge amount of information sent and received, as well as phone calls are not feasible as most of these farms are located in remote areas where there is no network, How can we find a smart solution to this problem, this is the challenge.

First of all we started talking to the client. Explained to us the true nature of how farms are working and the role of the agricultural engineer, and what problems the engineer always facing. He showed us the current version of The Platform App, and it's problems. Also he informed us of the main 11 activities of any engineer in the farm (irrigation, fertilization, pets and daises, etc...) and why it's important to craft the whole app around these activities. Also, we discussed the solution of making one conceptional page of all the activities, while the user can add or remove whatever option to that page (like Notion and Asana). Also, we looked at the web version through which the manager will receive the reports.

Research

After I understood the client's vision very well, I went to search about the competitors how they solved these problems, after a long research I found that there is no one solved the issue of communication in the large farms itself while they focused on offering a management solutions. Then I went to the users, spoke to them via phone and chats, in the beginning with the users I started with general question about their age, studies etc.. , then I started asking about their normal day in the farms with focusing on the way they communicate with supervisors and found that they're using either writing reports, phone calls or via WhatsApp. I asked about whether they are facing any problems with these communication methods, their initial answer was no but after my explanation of our solution and idea their expression turned into positive and liked the idea also expected that would solve them a lot of problems with labors, weather and communication.

  • After talking to the users and understanding their needs and pain points, I wanted to document all their words and actions in an empathy map, that always makes my solution more user-centric.

Ideation

  • Based on our user research along aside with our client's discussions, we came out with this feature analysis.
  • we decided that the main experience of the app will be revolved around sending & receiving activities.

After along ideation session, we reached to the main user flow between the main feature, for example, we found that it's more logical to add the labor evaluation in the end of every task as optional choice, while also the user can reach to the scan button from the home screen.

Solution

Finally, we came out to the final part. After making a complete flow, I went to conduct a moderated usability testing on one of our users, and it was really helpful to validate our solution, I've assigned to him a task to conduct and during the task I was asking about what he expects in every page and his suggestions.

We were very careful about making the experience so simple as long as our user isn't a high-tech person, that's explains why we used the wizard concept in every activity, so the user can realize that the task is divided into steps.

Takeaways:

  • Always test with at least 5 users.
  • Better to ask an insightful question in the usability testing, not leading questions.
  • User interviews will lead to attitudinal insights, while user testing will lead to behavioral insights
